In order to grow your career, you need to take control and lead from the front and not wait for others to define where your career will go.

  1. Practice Proactivity
The art of proactivity is key to career development and it’s one of the single biggest things that separates those who get promoted verses those who don’t.
  2. Upskill, Always
Strive to be the best you can be in your field and in fields you work closely alongside. Upskilling can not only help you with career development in a very effective way, it can also make you less and less disposable to your employer.
  3. Coach and Be Coached
Coaching is extremely valuable for career development, progression and professional growth. If you do not have a Coach, consider finding a coach and start a coaching program as soon as you can. You may also wish to coach others as this will also show your value to the company in how you help other people grow.
  4. Explore
No matter how large your company is, there is always room to explore. Explore different departments, opportunities, colleagues’ roles and competing companies and don’t ever be afraid to explore different industries.
  5. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
A great rule of thumb is to do something every day that scares you. While it’s often quite a challenge to do this, it should certainly be an aim! Every time we step outside our comfort zone, we learn more about ourselves and we learn new skills too.
