The process of resignation is far more complex than receiving a resignation letter from the employee.

There are signs we need to look out for before it gets too late.

An employee goes through a process of resignation that we may be unaware of. There are 5 steps to the resignation process.

  1. They give up
  2. They hand in their resignation
  3. They socially discharge from the company – they disengage
  4. They emotionally exit the company – they may lose respect for the company and some of its people
  5. They exit – last day of work

Before an employee gets to the point of resigning, there are many signals we should be looking out for.

These signs may include;

  1. Increased absenteeism
  2. Use of sick leave
  3. Less engagement with their work mates
  4. Changes in efficiency
  5. Potentially more conflict
  6. Increase in the use of their mobile phone at work
  7. Care free attitude
  8. Lower levels of communication

If we as leaders get it right, we pick up on these signals early enough and identify the issues with the employee and help them through it before we lose our quality people.
