Being a leader is like being a shepherd to a flock of sheep.
The primary responsibility of a shepherd is the safety and welfare of the flock. To guide the sheep to feed, protect the sheep from harm and to keep the sheep together.
Being a leader is exactly the same. As a leader we need to;
- Guide your people to success. Give them quality time, support and coaching to help them get the nourishment they need to grow and be a successful member of your team.
- Protect your people from harm. Your people need to know their leader has their back. That their leader with protect them from external threats or risks yet give them enough space to allow them to stretch their capability to add greater value to the team.
- Keep the team together. By this we mean that as a leader you have created a shared vision and that everyone is working towards the same goal and all heading in the same direction.
So being a great leader is just like a good shepherd. Your primary responsibility as a great leader is the safety and welfare of your people, and in return they will give you their blood, sweat and tears to help you be successful.
