Being an outstanding leader is about being an amazing coach.
Instead of wanting to maintain control and not empowering your people to do their job, a solid leader will coach and develop their people to enable them to achieve success, which ultimately leads to your success as a leader.
Instead of jumping in and always giving the solution because you do not have time to coach and develop, hold back and ask the right questions so the coachee develops their mindset and thinking so that ultimately they know how to deal with things in the future.
As a leader and coach, be inquisitive about the issue and the person, show a personal interest in wanting to help the person grow and enable them to make mistakes in order to grow.
Should you feel their solution will fail and cost the company significantly in health, safety, profits, or reputation then continue questioning the coachee to help them see the risk and look for a better option, don’t just jump in and fix it for them.
Leading and coaching is about asking the right questions, steering the coachee in the right direction, developing their mindset and listening attentively to hear the story and reward or encourage where appropriate.
